An imbecile habit has risen in modern controversy of saying
that some dogma was credible in the twelfth century, but is
not credible in the twentieth. You might as well say that a
certain philosophy can be believed on Mondays, but cannot
be believed on Tuesdays.
Abolish religion if you like. Throw everything on secular
government if you like. But do not be surprised if a machinery
that was never meant to do anything but secure external
decency and order fails to secure internal honesty and peace.
The truth is that it is only by believing in God that we can ever criticize the Government. Once abolish the God, and the Government becomes the God. The fact is written all across human history; but it is written more plainly across that recent history of Russia.
