God and Government

  1. Since I just noticed that you specifically posted this as an article, I figured I’d comment here as well to let your readers know you are using a cut-up quote.

Specifically cut out is the sentence that says “Because we have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion.”

So Adams knows that the US Constitution is secular, and specifically points out that it is not intended to be a moral guide. Therefore, we need moral people. Or religious people. Didn’t matter to him which. Certainly he never endorsed Christianity.

    You’re welcome for the correction.
