What Hitler, Stalin, and Mao did not believe

David Berlinski 2What Hitler did not believe and what Stalin did not believe and what Mao did not believe and what the SS did not believe and what the Gestapo did not believe and what the NKVD did not believe and what the commissars, functionaries, swaggering executioners, Nazi doctors, Communist Party theoreticians, intellectuals, Brown Shirts, Black Shirts, gauleiters, and a thousand party hacks did not believe was that God was watching what they were doing. And as far as we can tell, very few of those carrying out the horrors of the twentieth century worried overmuch that God was watching what they were doing either. That is, after all, the meaning of a secular society.

    • Are you able to substantiate that?

Listen to Hitlers’s words at Auschwitz: “I freed Germany from the stupid and degrading fallacies of conscience and morality…we will train young people before whom the world will tremble.”

How do conscience and morality become “fallacies” if not by the discarding of belief in God?

      • If you consider God, morality becomes subjective there too. However, don’t my earlier comment seriously. Take this comment as a counter:
What the members of The Army of God(A network of violent Christianists that has been active since the early 1980s, the Army of God openly promotes killing abortion providers),Eastern Lightning, a.k.a. the Church of the Almighty God,The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA),TheNational Liberation Front of Tripura,The Phineas Priesthood believe is that the christian God is watching them and granting their deeds.

  1. Human beings have a pretty dismal track record on planet earth, don’t they? It seems that both believers and non-believers have found justification in their belief system for acts of violence.

No such justification could ever be found in Jesus. Far from demanding the blood of his enemies, He gave his life for them. Any true follower of Jesus would learn to follow his example. Christ followers are called to love their enemies, to forgive 70 x 7.

As for the followers of anyone or anything else… violence is best to be expected.
